Meet Jade: Environmental Approvals Consultant
Jade Nearhos’ career journey is a great example of how following your interests – and being open to change – can lead you exactly where you’re meant to be. From starting out in ecology and fieldwork to finding her stride in environmental approvals, Jade brings both technical insight and people‑focused thinking to her role at e2m.
Joining e2m in November last year, Jade works as an Environmental Approvals Consultant, helping guide complex infrastructure, mining and renewable energy projects through the approvals process – while balancing environmental protection with practical outcomes for clients.
From wildlife science to environmental approvals
Jade studied Wildlife Science at university, drawn to environmental work by a genuine interest in ecology – even without a clear picture of where that path would lead. Like many graduates, breaking into the industry wasn’t easy at first, and she took on a role outside her field while continuing to look for opportunities.
That opportunity came in the form of an ecology role in Townsville, where Jade spent several years gaining hands‑on field experience. While she enjoyed the work, the reality of constant travel and time away from home prompted her to rethink what she wanted from her career.
A move into environmental approvals allowed Jade to stay connected to environmental outcomes – while working in a role better aligned with her lifestyle and strengths.
“I didn’t really know where my degree would take me – I just knew I wanted to work in the environmental space. Trying different roles helped me work out what suited me, not just professionally but personally as well.”
Finding the right fit in approvals
Transitioning from ecology to approvals came with a steep learning curve, but it quickly became clear that this was where Jade thrived.
Unlike ecology’s deep focus on a single discipline, approvals requires a broad understanding of multiple technical areas – from noise and air quality to groundwater and biodiversity – and the ability to bring them together into a clear, cohesive narrative.
“You’re essentially pulling together all the moving pieces and telling a story – one that helps decision‑makers understand both the risks and the solutions.”
Her ecology background has proven to be a valuable asset, allowing Jade to bridge the gap between technical specialists, clients and regulators.
Why e2m? Values, culture and collaboration
Having worked with e2m as a client in previous roles, Jade was already familiar with the quality of the team and its reputation. What ultimately drew her in, however, was e2m’s strong focus on values and culture.
“You don’t see many consultancies that genuinely put values first. At e2m, it’s not just about utilisation or output – it’s about people.”
Since joining, Jade says the culture has lived up to expectations – collaborative, approachable and supportive at every level.
“Even the owners are genuinely approachable. People make time for each other, and that makes a huge difference – both professionally and personally.”
Outside of work
Outside the office, Jade brings the same dedication and discipline to her passion for cycling. Competing in the national elite racing circuit, she balances a demanding training schedule with full‑time work – fitting in 350km of early‑morning rides before the workday begins.
“I love the challenge, but also the team aspect – training and travelling together, supporting younger riders, and pushing yourself to see what you’re capable of.”
Advice for early‑career professionals
For those starting out in their environmental careers, Jade’s advice is simple: try everything.
“Take every opportunity to explore different areas. You don’t always know what’s right for you until you’ve given it a go – and every experience teaches you something valuable.”
