Balancing biodiversity impacts with measurable conservation outcomes.
Offsets have been part of e2m’s work since 2018, but in recent years they have become an increasingly significant part of the projects we deliver. With regulatory bodies tightening expectations around both the planning and delivery of offsets, our clients are looking for support to navigate the complexities. They want clear pathways, strategic advice, and practical solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
This year we established a dedicated offsets team. We caught up with Principal Offsets Consultant Shelley Nailon on our delivery-focused approach and how she ensures strategies are not only compliant but also cost-effective and designed for long-term success.
“What really stands out,” says Shelley, “is how having a dedicated offsets team has already changed outcomes for clients. We’re not just meeting compliance requirements, we’re building clear, strategic and practical pathways that deliver real value to our clients.”
Year One in Action
In just our first year, the offsets team has already made a measurable impact helping clients navigate complex projects while delivering practical, strategic solutions.
“Our vision was to offer a comprehensive offsets service, where clients can engage us early and collaborate with us throughout the entire lifecycle. We want to simplify the process for our clients,” explains Shelley “offsets take a deceptively long time to move from concept to approval. The earlier we are engaged, the faster we can get moving and the smoother the process is for our clients.”
Some of the significant outcomes we have delivered include:
LGC – We guided this project through DCCEEW review, securing approval for the OAMPs, and are now supporting planning for on-ground delivery to ensure offsets are implemented effectively. [Read more about this project]
CopperString Stage 4 – We are leading offset identification, conducting field assessments, and drafting OAMPs for regulator approval, providing end-to-end offsets support for this landmark project.
Stanmore – We are reviewing future offset requirements, using GIS modelling to assess land options, and providing strategic advice to deliver cost-effective, long-term offset solutions.
Turning Complexity into Clarity
Having a specialised team has transformed how e2m delivers offsets. Our people immerse themselves in the detail of legislation, policy, and ecological practice.
“We knew from the start that offsets were only going to grow in complexity. Building a team that lives and breathes this work means we can help our clients feel confident and supported in a challenging space.” explains Shelley.
This dedication means we stay ahead of regulatory changes, provide data-driven advice that withstands scrutiny, and draw on practical on-ground experience to ensure strategies work in practice.
We are proud of what the team has achieved in its first year, from securing approvals for high-profile infrastructure projects to shaping long-term strategies for resource clients. Looking forward, we are focused on expanding team’s capacity, leveraging new technology to enhance survey and monitoring capabilities and growing our ability to offer clients access to landholders with suitable offset properties through an increasingly connected and responsive network.
