The Project

Centurion North Development (CND) is a proposed extension to the existing Centurion underground metallurgical coal mine, incorporating a surface gas extraction network. e2m was engaged to deliver a comprehensive ecological assessment and technical reporting to support environmental approvals.

Our Approach

e2m deployed a team of ecologists, GIS specialists, and regulatory experts – working as one seamless unit across ecology, analytics, offsets, spatial, and approvals. Our team conducted targeted wet and dry season field surveys using a suite of techniques including spotlighting, trapping, bird surveys, and flora searches to identify MNES, MSES, and Threatened Ecological Communities (TECs). A third survey focused on habitat quality within the defined disturbance footprint, ensuring robust data to inform impact quantification. We also provided specialist subconsulting services to assess aquatic ecology values, including groundwater-dependent ecosystems and stygofauna. Our commitment to innovation and collaboration enabled us to deliver high-quality data and isights integrated into a cohesive technical ecology report.

Outcomes

  • Confirmed the presence of MNES and MSES within the project area
  • Delivered a clear and defensible quantification of significant impacts to these matters
  • Enabled a transparent, evidence-based environmental approvals process
