The Project
The Coppabella open-cut coal mine is expanding to include underground mining to the north. A key component of the project involves a proposed waterway redirection, requiring a detailed ecological assessment to support feasibility and secure environmental approvals.
Our Approach
e2m conducted a targeted wet season ecological survey to assess terrestrial values determining the presence of Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES) and Matters of State Environmental Significance (MSES) within the project area. Our team applied a comprehensive suite of survey techniques including flora and fauna detection, bioacoustic monitoring, motion cameras, TEC assessments, and habitat quality analysis. GIS tools and regional ecosystem verification supported spatial accuracy and impact quantification.
Outcomes
- Confirmed the presence of MNES and MSES within the project footprint
- Delivered a detailed and defensible assessment of potential impacts, including significance ratings
- Provided a clear evidence base to inform the feasibility of the proposed waterway redirection
- Enabled a transparent, science-backed pathway to support the project’s environmental approvals
