The Project
Located on the edge of the Simpson Desert, the Southern Georgina Basin is a remote and geologically significant region in Queensland, containing deep sequences of Neoproterozoic, Cambrian, Ordovician and Devonian carbonate and clastic sediments up to 5,000 metres in thickness.
Central Petroleum engaged e2m to undertake rehabilitation monitoring across three Authority to Prospect (ATP) tenements, namely ATP909, ATP911 and ATP912, subject to a two-dimensional seismic survey program. The objective of the monitoring was to undertake a contemporary assessment of previously disturbed areas to demonstrate successful rehabilitation against the relevant Enviornmental Authorities and support the relinquishment of the tenements.

Our Approach
e2m deployed a team of ecologists to assess rehabilitation progress across an extensive and logistically challenging site. With limited prior access information and minimal on-ground infrastructure, the team relied on a combination of remote sensing, GPS navigation, and field-based assessments to ensure full site coverage.
Key elements included:
Rapid mobilisation and planning to meet tight reporting timelines.
Use of spatial technology to support safe navigation and survey coverage.
Field-based evaluation of rehabilitation success against regulatory benchmarks, comprising vegetation and ground cover assessments.

Outcomes
e2m successfully delivered comprehensive rehabilitation monitoring report following each deployment confirming areas that had met the required standards for relinquishment. Despite the remoteness and lack of prior site data, our team ensured safe and thorough coverage of the area. The reports provided Central Petroleum with the evidence needed to proceed with relinquishing all three ATPs, marking the conclusion of their exploration activities in the Queensland section of the Southern Georgina Basin. This project highlights e2m’s ability to safely deliver high-quality ecological assessments under challenging field conditions, with speed, accuracy and alignment with regulatory requirements.
