The Project

The Project will facilitate the entry of this economically important region into the NEM and will provide opportunities for new industrial facilities, and large agricultural and renewable energy projects. The major infrastructure project includes four separate but related actions. The Mount Isa Connection will upgrade and supplement the transfer capacity between the Dajarra Road Substation and the Mica Creek Complex at Mount Isa. The Mount Isa Connection will consist of a new substation at Mount Isa, with a dual circuit 220 kV transmission line connection the Dajarra Road Substation.

Our Approach

e2m was engaged to support the Commonwealth environmental approvals process under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). This included preparing a Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES) Report using existing datasets to support the EPBC Referral, identifying data gaps in the available information, and proactively planning to address them. The team also carried out targeted field surveys to supplement the MNES assessment and respond to a Request for Information (RFI) from the Commonwealth Regulator. e2m continues to develop the Preliminary Documentation package to support the next stage of the EPBC assessment.

Outcomes

  • Delivered a comprehensive MNES Report that enabled timely submission of the EPBC Referral.
  • Provided targeted, regulator-aligned field data to address identified information gaps—demonstrating our commitment to quality and compliance.
  • Supported regulatory confidence through a proactive, transparent, and technically robust approach.
  • Positioned the project for streamlined environmental approvals, reducing delays and uncertainty.
