The Project
The Queensland Government’s SuperGrid Infrastructure Blueprint outlines a transformative pathway for the State’s electricity system. The Blueprint is a point-in-time document and updated will occur on a biennial basis with the first update to be released in 2025.
Our Client, Powerlink Queensland is leading the delivery of this inititive which includes four stages of new high-voltage backbone transmission line projects which will to be completed by the mid-2030s.
These lines will connect pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) assets and renewable energy zones to Queensland’s major demand centres.
e2m was engaged during the early planning phase to develop a preliminary Environmental Offset Strategy aligned with the current Blueprint. This desktop-based assessment leveraged advanced GIS habitat modelling to provide early insights and strategic direction.
Our Approach
e2m conducted a targeted wet season ecological survey to assess terrestrial values determining the presence of Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES) and Matters of State Environmental Significance (MSES) within the project area. Our team applied a comprehensive suite of survey techniques including flora and fauna detection, bioacoustic monitoring, motion cameras, TEC assessments, and habitat quality analysis. GIS tools and regional ecosystem verification supported spatial accuracy and impact quantification.
Outcomes
- Confirmed the presence of MNES and MSES within the project footprint
- Delivered a detailed and defensible assessment of potential impacts, including significance ratings
- Provided a clear evidence base to inform the feasibility of the proposed waterway redirection
- Enabled a transparent, science-backed pathway to support the project’s environmental approvals
