What is Bioacoustics? Why Us? Ongoing Applications
Ecology + Technology:
Bringing your data to life
At E2M, we’re known for our focus on technology driven ecology. From AI to bioacoustics through to full data analytics, our team have an extensive track record in delivering balanced environmental outcomes for our clients, through a commercial lens.
The analytics service – Breathing life into your data.
Our State-of-the-art call and image detection models are already delivering value to clients across Queensland.
See how we’re already getting results.
By enabling ecology through technology, we’re able to provide an intensive survey using networks of dozens of audio recorders and camera traps. Data is captured 24/7, then distilled using AI models to interpret and identify occurrence and absence of key species to provide data accuracy like never before.
Off-the-shelf analytics solutions for ecologists
Our bioacoustics and image analytics services offer solutions for tracking species presence, distribution, and abundance through technology. We provide:
- Bioacoustic analysis: Identify wildlife calls within long-term field audio recordings.
- Image detection for wildlife: Fast and accurate species identification, specialising in motion-activated camera data, a vital tool for ecologists.
Our pre-configured models include key species including:
- Koala
- Yellow-bellied glider
- Black-throated finch
- Diamond firetail
- Squatter pigeon
- Masked owl
- Painted honeyeater
Bespoke analytics
Our extensive in-house capability assists organisations in developing bespoke methods for most species that have a distinguishable call, including many species of birds, frogs and some mammals.
Our team is also able to provide analytic services for all camera trap data, underpinned by the necessary skills and capacity to undertake the site work required to design and implement the acoustic recorder and remote camera setups.
The power of bioacoustics
Bioacoustics is transforming ecological assessments. Acoustic data is easy and cost-effective to collect, however undertaking the analysis of vast datasets can be resource-intensive. Our analytics solutions offer:
- Cost efficiency: Reduced workload for species monitoring.
- Accurate detection: Confident insights on species presence or absence.
- Site-specific insights: Site-by-site analysis of species abundances
- Population tracking: Monitoring changes to meet environmental compliance.
- Responsiveness: Measuring the impact of management interventions.
- Effectiveness: Demonstrating progress / success in conservation measures.
What is Bioacoustics?
Bioacoustics is becoming increasingly used in ecological assessments and monitoring. Acoustic data are easy and cost effective to collect, however resourcing capability to identify and monitor the target calls is cost prohibitive with such vast datasets.
Is Bioacoustics for you?
Often organisations need tools to monitor rare, threatened and pest species for offset and compliance monitoring. Bioacoustics is a powerful method to determine the presence or absence of threatened species and monitor their population changes.
Bioacoustics is potentially suitable for any species call that can be identified from other species in audio recording. Our AI driven solutions improve the efficiency and accuracy of screening large audio dataset for calls of the target species.
Advanced AI for Ecology
Our AI models, developed by our team of expert ecologists, streamline data analysis. Using convolutional neural networks, we pre-label data before our team ensures veracity and quality.
We use high quality acoustic recorders and camera traps, including from temporary deployments and permanent establishments.
Why us?
We offer a unique combination of AI driven data analysis backed through QA by human experts in ecology to ensure confidence in and veracity of results.
Our pedigree in technology driven ecology is vast. As the largest team of ecologists in Queensland you know you’re in safe hands. We understand the technology and the ecology behind your needs and requirements. And we’re able to fulfill all of those needs in-house.
The Team
Leading our Analytics Practice, John van Osta is dedicated to enhancing environmental assessments. He is pursuing a PhD in machine learning for monitoring bird sounds and movements and brings extensive experience in large-scale impact assessments, biodiversity monitoring, and environmental compliance.
Ongoing Applications
Bravus – We are implementing a long-term research and monitoring program for the Black-throated Finch with our client, Bravus. We implement an acoustic array and camera trap monitoring program that monitors black-throated finch and squatter pigeon across a network of over 20 water sources.
