The Project
The Moorevale South Extension (MVSX) is a proposed expansion of the existing mining operation, requiring detailed ecological assessment to support federal environmental approvals. e2m was engaged to determine the presence of Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES) and Matters of State Environmental Significance (MSES), and to quantify potential impacts within the project area.
Our Approach
e2m delivered a comprehensive ecological assessment aligned with federal regulatory requirements. Our team conducted targeted wet and dry season field surveys using a diverse suite of techniques including nocturnal spotlighting, funnel and pitfall trapping, watersource bird surveys, random meander threatened flora surveys and active microhabitat searches. e2m determined the presence of MNES and MSES within the MVSX Project area and the quanitfication of significant impacts. The assessment included the identification of threatened ecological communities (TECs) and habitat quality assessments. In addition, e2m provided subconsulting services to assess aquatic ecology values, including groundwater-dependent ecosystems and stygofauna, integrating these findings into a cohesive technical report.
Outcomes
e2m confirmed the presence of MNES and MSES within the MVSX project area and delivered a detailed, defensible impact assessment aligned with federal requirements. This work enabled a transparent, evidence-based environmental approvals process and supported the project’s Controlled Action Determination in June 2025, allowing progression via a Public Environmental Report (PER). e2m continues to collaborate with SLR and Peabody, bringing deep ecological expertise and regulatory insight to guide the project through the next phase of federal approvals.
